SEO vs AEO vs GEO: What’s the Difference?
If you run a website, you’ve probably seen AEO and GEO popping up alongside SEO lately. The names sound similar, and there’s quite a bit of overlap, but here’s a useful way to understand them.
SEO — Search Engine Optimization
SEO is about helping people find your website through search engines like Google and Bing.
It includes useful content, descriptive titles, internal links, relevant backlinks, and making sure search engines can crawl your pages. The goal is to appear in relevant searches and bring people to your site.
Example: Your guide to recurring Bitcoin buys appears when someone searches “how to buy Bitcoin automatically.”
AEO — Answer Engine Optimization
AEO focuses on making your content useful as a direct answer to someone’s question. Think featured snippets, voice assistants, and answer-based search experiences.
Clear questions, concise answers, and easy-to-follow explanations are common approaches.
Example: Your guide provides a short explanation of Bitcoin DCA that a search engine can show directly in its results.
GEO — Generative Engine Optimization
GEO focuses on visibility in AI-generated responses, such as answers from ChatGPT search, Copilot, or Google’s AI search features.
The aim is for your content or brand to be cited, mentioned, or used as a supporting source. Accurate explanations, original information, and clear sourcing can help make your content useful in those responses. Microsoft explains this shift here.
Example: Someone asks an AI assistant about automatic Bitcoin purchases, and it cites your guide while comparing services.
What do they have in common?
All three benefit from helpful, trustworthy content that’s easy to find and understand.
The distinction is mostly where and how that content appears: a search listing, a direct answer, or an AI-generated response. AEO and GEO aren’t universally defined terms, so you’ll see people use them interchangeably.
And SEO still matters. Google says its existing SEO best practices remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode—there’s no special optimization required just to qualify. Google’s guidance
