What are the main differences between ChatGPT and Claude
Company and philosophy. ChatGPT is made by OpenAI, Claude is made by Anthropic. Both started from similar research roots but have leaned into somewhat different priorities over time — OpenAI has generally pushed toward being a broad, all-in-one platform (chat, image gen, voice, agents, a huge plugin/connector ecosystem), while Anthropic has stayed more narrowly focused on making one assistant that's careful, follows instructions precisely, and is safety-conscious by design. Neither approach is objectively "better," they just optimize for different things.
Writing style and personality. This is one of the more noticeable differences day to day. ChatGPT's default voice tends to be more upbeat and casual — good for content that wants energy and personality baked in. Claude tends to write in a more grounded, less "obviously AI" register by default, which people often prefer for professional writing, long-form pieces, or anything where you don't want it to sound like a brand voice. Both can be steered away from their defaults with the right prompting, but the out-of-the-box feel is different.
Instruction-following on complex prompts. If you give either model a prompt with a lot of specific constraints stacked together (tone + format + length + things to avoid), Claude tends to stick to all of them more reliably across a long response, where ChatGPT has more of a tendency to drift back toward its own style the longer the output gets. If you're doing anything with strict formatting requirements, that's usually where people notice the gap.
Coding. Both are genuinely strong here and it shifts release to release, so don't take anyone's word (including mine) as gospel on any given week. Claude tends to get singled out for handling large, multi-file codebases and longer refactors well, and Claude Code (Anthropic's coding-agent tool) is well regarded. ChatGPT is also very capable, especially for quick snippets and has its own agentic coding tooling. Worth just trying both on your actual codebase rather than trusting a benchmark screenshot.
Multimodal stuff. This is where ChatGPT has a real structural advantage — native image generation (so it can generate images inside the conversation), a more mature voice mode, and generally more built-in modalities. Claude can read images and documents well but doesn't generate images natively.
Ecosystem and integrations. ChatGPT has the larger third-party plugin/GPT-store ecosystem. Claude has been leaning into MCP (Model Context Protocol), an open standard for connecting AI to tools and data sources — Anthropic created it and it's becoming fairly widely adopted, so Claude's tool-connection ecosystem is growing quickly even if it's historically been smaller.
Context window / handling long documents. Both support very large context windows at this point, and the exact numbers get bumped with pretty much every release from either company, so I'd take any specific figure you read (including anywhere in this post) with a grain of salt and just check each company's current docs if that number matters for your use case. In practice, people generally report Claude handling long documents and long sessions a bit more consistently without losing the thread.
Pricing. Both have a free tier and a roughly similarly-priced paid consumer plan, plus higher tiers for heavier use. Exact pricing and limits change often enough that I'd just check anthropic.com and openai.com directly rather than trust a number from a random blog post (mine included).
Bottom line: if you mainly want strong writing, careful instruction-following, and don't need image/voice generation, a lot of people lean Claude. If you want one app that does chat + images + voice + a big plugin ecosystem, ChatGPT covers more ground natively. Honestly a lot of people just end up using both for different things, since they're not mutually exclusive and the free tiers exist for a reason.
